We are beginning to gain a true perspective into just how important the resiliency of the indoor built environment is in helping keep occupants safe and healthy during episodic events, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Successfully navigating toward the “next normal” will require holistically evaluating the interrelationships between people, education, and research delivery processes; the physical environment; the use of technology; and financial realities.
We must design to enable quality of care and flexibility in facilities to keep residents and caregivers safe from this novel virus and future potential threats while balancing design solutions that protect and promote the social and mental wellness of residents and staff.
